NMAT 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Understanding the eligibility criteria is the first step towards preparing for NMIMS Management Aptitude Test (NMAT). The exam is conducted by NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies) at the university level for candidates seeking admission to Management & Business programmes across India. Candidates must carefully verify that they meet all requirements before filling the application form to avoid rejection at a later stage.

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university with at least 50% marks. Final year students may also apply. Work experience is not mandatory but preferred.

Important Points to Remember

1

Verify your eligibility well before the application deadline to avoid last-minute issues.

2

Keep all required documents (marksheets, certificates, ID proof) ready before starting the application.

3

Final-year students can usually apply provisionally - check the official notification for details.

4

Always refer to the official NMAT website for the most up-to-date eligibility norms.

NMAT Exam Pattern

Overview

NMAT by GMAC is a computer-based, self-paced management entrance exam conducted by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) on behalf of NMIMS. The exam is administered in a window-based format, allowing candidates to choose their test date, time, and center. Candidates may retake the exam up to three times per testing year, with a minimum 15-day gap between attempts.

Sections and Time Allocation

SectionNumber of QuestionsTime AllottedScore Range
Language Skills3628 minutes12–120
Quantitative Skills3652 minutes12–120
Logical Reasoning3640 minutes12–120
Total108120 minutes36–360

Question Types and Marking Scheme

All questions are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with four options each. NMAT uses a scaled scoring system rather than raw marks — each section is scored on a scale of 12 to 120, and the total score ranges from 36 to 360. Each correct answer contributes to the scaled score. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers, making it advisable to attempt all questions.

Section Time Management

Each section has a strict, independently timed clock. Once a section's time expires, the exam automatically moves to the next section. Candidates cannot revisit a section after leaving it. The Quantitative Skills section receives the most time (52 minutes) reflecting the calculation-intensive nature of its questions. Candidates can reorder questions within a section and skip and return to questions within the allotted time.

Score Validity and Retake Policy

The best score across all attempts in the testing window is considered by NMIMS and other participating institutes. Scaled scores are used for shortlisting, ensuring fairness across testing windows and candidate cohorts.

NMAT 2026 Cutoff Scores

NMAT cutoff is the minimum score required by candidates to qualify the examination and become eligible for the next stage of admission. The cutoff is determined by NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies) based on factors like total number of candidates, difficulty level of the paper, and availability of seats. The exam is conducted for a total of 360 marks. Candidates from reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PwD) generally have lower cutoff scores compared to the General category.

Cutoff Data Not Yet Available

NMAT 2026 cutoff scores will be published after the results are declared. Check back for updates.

NMAT Preparation Tips

Subject-Wise Recommended Books

  • Language Skills: Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis, High School English Grammar by Wren & Martin
  • Quantitative Skills: Quantitative Aptitude by R.S. Aggarwal, How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude by Arun Sharma
  • Logical Reasoning: Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation by Nishit Sinha, A Modern Approach to Logical Reasoning by R.S. Aggarwal

Study Schedule Strategy

NMAT has a 75-day testing window (typically October to December). Since candidates can attempt NMAT up to three times per cycle, plan your first attempt around 6–8 weeks into the window. Dedicate 3–4 hours daily: 1.5 hours on Quantitative Skills, 1 hour on Language Skills, and 1 hour on Logical Reasoning. Reserve weekends for full-length mocks.

Mock Test Strategy

NMAT is unique because it is section-adaptive and allows you to choose the order of sections on exam day. Practice all three section sequences during mock tests to determine your optimal order. Use the official NMAT by GMAC practice tests (2 free official mocks available) and platforms like iQuanta, Career Launcher, and TIME for additional mocks. Analyse your performance section by section after each attempt.

Important Topics

  • Quantitative Skills (48 questions, 60 min): Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Modern Maths (Permutation & Combination, Probability), Data Sufficiency
  • Language Skills (36 questions, 28 min): Reading Comprehension, Para Jumbles, Fill in the Blanks, Error Correction, Vocabulary
  • Logical Reasoning (36 questions, 38 min): Critical Reasoning, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Syllogisms, Series

Leverage the Retake Policy

NMAT allows up to 3 attempts per testing year with a mandatory 15-day gap between attempts. If your first score is below 210 (a common NMIMS Mumbai cutoff benchmark), register immediately for a retake. Your best score is sent to colleges.

Exam-Day Tips

NMAT is a Computer-Based Test conducted at Pearson VUE centres. Carry your admit card and a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, or Passport). You may choose the order of the three sections at the start — most toppers recommend starting with Logical Reasoning or Quantitative Skills when mental alertness is highest. There is no negative marking, so attempt all 120 questions. Manage time strictly: avoid spending more than 75 seconds per question.

NMAT Counselling Process

NMAT is conducted by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) on behalf of NMIMS. Unlike JEE or NEET, there is no centralised counselling authority like JoSAA or MCC. Admission through NMAT scores is managed independently by each participating institution. The primary and most sought-after destination is NMIMS Mumbai, which runs its own Selection Process (SP).

  1. Score Declaration & Application: NMAT scores are available immediately after the test. Candidates must separately apply to NMIMS and other accepting colleges (SPJIMR, Xavier University, SRM, VIT, Alliance, ICFAI, etc.) through their individual portals. The NMIMS application window typically closes in January.
  2. NMIMS Shortlisting: NMIMS Mumbai shortlists candidates based on their best NMAT score (cutoff typically 210+ for MBA Core). Shortlisted candidates are called for the NMIMS Selection Process, which includes a Written Ability Test (WAT) and a Personal Interview (PI) conducted in February–March.
  3. Choice of Campus: NMIMS has campuses at Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Navi Mumbai, Indore, Chandigarh, and Dhule. Candidates indicate campus and programme preferences at the time of application. Seat offers are based on composite score (NMAT + WAT + PI + academic profile).
  4. Offer Letter & Document Verification: Selected candidates receive offer letters via email. Documents required include: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, graduation degree/transcripts, NMAT scorecard, valid ID proof, caste certificate (if applicable), and passport-size photographs.
  5. Fee Payment: Candidates must pay the programme confirmation fee (non-refundable) within the deadline specified in the offer letter to secure their seat. For NMIMS Mumbai MBA, this is typically in the range of ₹2–3 lakh as an advance against total fees.
  6. Reporting & Enrolment: Final reporting to the campus and completion of enrolment formalities (original document submission, medical fitness certificate, anti-ragging undertaking) happens before the commencement of the academic term, usually in June–July.

Candidates applying to other NMAT-accepting institutions should check each university's individual admission timeline, as processes vary. State-level MBA counselling (e.g., DTE Maharashtra's CAP rounds) does not accept NMAT scores — those use MAH-CET.
