TISSNET Exam Pattern 2024–25

TISSNET (Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test) is a computer-based test conducted by TISS for admission to its Master's degree programmes across campuses in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Tuljapur, and Guwahati. The test is of 100 minutes duration with 100 questions carrying 1 mark each. There is no negative marking, so candidates are encouraged to attempt all questions.

Each question carries 1 mark. There is no sectional time limit; candidates can allocate the 100-minute window across sections as per their strategy. All questions are objective type (MCQ) with four answer choices. The test is administered online via a designated testing agency (typically NTA or HireMee), and results are used for shortlisting candidates for TISS Personal Interviews held at respective campuses.

TISSNET scores are valid only for the admission cycle in which the test is taken. Candidates applying to HRM & Labour Relations, Social Entrepreneurship, or Development Studies programmes at TISS must mandatorily appear in TISSNET as the first stage of selection.

TISSNET Syllabus 2024–25

1. English Proficiency (30 Questions)

• Reading Comprehension — passages from social sciences, current affairs, and humanities (typically 2–3 passages)
• Vocabulary — synonyms, antonyms, word usage in context
• Grammar — error spotting, sentence correction, subject-verb agreement
• Para Jumbles — rearranging sentences to form coherent paragraphs

2. Mathematics & Logical Reasoning (30 Questions)

• Number System — HCF, LCM, divisibility, remainders
• Arithmetic — percentages, profit & loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion
• Time, Speed & Distance — trains, boats and streams, relative speed
• Data Interpretation — bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, tables (India-specific data contexts)
• Series Completion — number series, letter series

3. General Awareness (40 Questions)

• Current Affairs (India & Global) — events from the past 12–18 months, with emphasis on social policy, welfare schemes, and governance
• Indian Constitution & Polity — Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, Panchayati Raj, parliamentary system
• Social Development & Welfare — National Health Mission, MGNREGA, PM Awas Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Right to Education
• Indian Economy — GDP trends, Union Budget highlights, RBI monetary policy, inflation indices (CPI/WPI)

Know the TISSNET Exam Pattern

TISSNET consists of three sections: English Proficiency (30 questions), Maths & Logical Reasoning (30 questions), and General Awareness (40 questions). There is no negative marking, so attempt all 100 questions within 100 minutes. The General Awareness section is the highest-weightage section and often the differentiator between candidates.

Build a 90-Day Study Schedule

Divide your preparation into three phases. In the first month, build conceptual foundations: revise grammar rules, practice 20 maths problems daily, and read one newspaper article per day. In the second month, shift to section-wise timed practice: 30 minutes per section daily. In the final month, focus exclusively on full-length mock tests and revision of current affairs from the past 12 months.

Master General Awareness — TISSNET's Key Section

TISSNET places heavy emphasis on social issues, government schemes (PM Awas Yojana, Beti Bachao, MGNREGS), UN bodies, national and international awards, sports events, and Indian polity. Maintain a handwritten current affairs notebook covering September 2024 to January 2025 (the typical exam window). Pay special attention to topics related to social welfare, poverty indices, and TISS research areas such as human rights, labour welfare, and rural development.

Mock Test Strategy

Begin mock tests from week 5 of preparation. Use TISSNET-specific mocks from platforms like IMS, Career Launcher, and T.I.M.E. — avoid generic MBA mocks which don't mirror TISSNET's GA weightage. After each mock, spend equal time analysing errors as you spent taking the test. Track accuracy section-wise in a spreadsheet and identify weak topics for targeted revision.

English Proficiency Quick Wins

TISSNET's English section tests reading comprehension, fill-in-the-blanks, para-jumbles, and vocabulary. Learn 15 new words daily using the Norman Lewis method. For RC passages, practice skimming the first and last sentence of each paragraph to grasp the main idea within 60 seconds. Aim to complete the English section in under 20 minutes, banking time for GA.

Exam-Day Tips

• Report to the Prometric test centre at least 30 minutes early with your admit card and a valid photo ID (Aadhaar or passport).
• Since there is no negative marking, never leave a question unanswered — guess intelligently on GA questions using elimination.
• Attempt General Awareness first if it is your strongest section to lock in those 40 marks early.
• Keep an eye on the on-screen timer; allocate roughly 20 minutes to English, 30 minutes to Maths & Reasoning, and 25 minutes to GA, with 5 minutes to review flagged questions.

TISSNET Counselling Process (2024–25)

Unlike centralized counselling bodies such as JoSAA (JEE) or MCC (NEET), TISS conducts its own decentralized admissions process entirely through the TISS National Entrance Test (TISSNET) portal. There is no third-party counselling authority. The complete process from result to reporting is managed by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

1. Result Declaration: TISS publishes the TISSNET scorecard on the official portal (admissions.tiss.edu). Candidates can download their scores, which are valid for admission to MA, MSc, and MBA programmes across all four TISS campuses — Mumbai, Hyderabad, Tuljapur, and Guwahati.
2. Pre-Interview Registration (PIR): Shortlisted candidates must complete Pre-Interview Registration online, selecting their preferred programmes and campuses. Shortlisting is based on TISSNET score, programme-specific cutoffs, and (for some programmes) category reservations under SC/ST/OBC-NC/PWD/EWS norms.
3. Personal Interview (PI) & Written Ability Test (WAT): Shortlisted candidates appear for PI and WAT at the respective TISS campus. These are conducted programme-wise, typically in March. For HRM & LR and other management programmes, the PI carries significant weight in the final merit list.
4. Final Merit List & Offer Letter: TISS releases a final consolidated merit list on the admissions portal. Selected candidates receive an offer letter via email and the portal. Merit is computed as a weighted composite of TISSNET score, PI performance, WAT score, academic record, and work experience (for certain programmes).
5. Acceptance and Fee Payment: Candidates must accept the offer and pay the non-refundable seat acceptance fee (typically ₹10,000–₹20,000 depending on programme) within the stipulated deadline to confirm their seat. Failure to pay within the deadline results in automatic cancellation.
6. Document Verification: Candidates must submit self-attested copies of the following documents online and carry originals at the time of reporting: 10th and 12th marksheets, graduation certificate and marksheets, caste/category certificate (if applicable), EWS certificate (if applicable), income certificate, two passport-size photographs, and a valid government photo ID.
7. Waitlist Movement: TISS releases one or more waitlist rounds if seats remain unfilled after the first round. Waitlisted candidates are notified via email and must respond within 48–72 hours. There is typically one main round and one or two upgrade/waitlist rounds, all managed through the TISS admissions portal.
8. Reporting to Campus: Finally selected candidates report to their allotted TISS campus on the designated date (usually late May or June) for in-person document verification, biometric registration, and orientation. At this stage, originals of all documents are verified by the admissions office before enrolment is confirmed.
