CMAT

Overview

CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is a national-level online Computer-Based Test (CBT) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBA, PGDM, and other management programmes at AICTE-approved institutions across India. The test is held once a year, typically in January–February, and the score is valid for one academic year.

Structure of the Exam

Question Types

All questions are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with four options and a single correct answer. The Innovation & Entrepreneurship section is additional and institution-specific; its score may or may not be considered depending on the accepting college.

Marking Scheme

• Correct Answer: +4 marks
• Wrong Answer: −1 mark (negative marking applies)
• Unattempted Question: 0 marks

Duration and Mode

The total duration of CMAT is 180 minutes (3 hours) for the four core sections. Candidates attempting the optional Innovation & Entrepreneurship section get additional time. The exam is conducted entirely online in CBT mode at designated NTA test centres across India. There is no sectional time limit — candidates can allocate their 180 minutes across sections as they prefer.

1. Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation

• Number Systems — HCF, LCM, divisibility rules, surds and indices
• Arithmetic — Percentages, profit & loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, time-speed-distance, time and work
• Algebra — Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, logarithms
• Geometry & Mensuration — Triangles, circles, polygons, area and volume of 2D & 3D figures
• Modern Mathematics — Permutation and combination, probability, set theory, progressions (AP, GP)
• Data Interpretation — Bar graphs, line charts, pie charts, tables, caselets, mixed graphs
• Data Sufficiency — Two-statement DS questions based on arithmetic and algebra

2. Logical Reasoning

• Verbal Reasoning — Syllogisms, statements and conclusions, cause and effect, assumptions, course of action
• Analytical Reasoning — Seating arrangement (linear, circular), blood relations, direction sense, puzzles
• Non-Verbal Reasoning — Series completion, analogy, odd one out, matrix-based figures
• Critical Reasoning — Argument evaluation, strengthen/weaken arguments, inference-based questions
• Input-Output — Machine-input type arrangement problems

3. Language Comprehension

• Reading Comprehension — Passages from business, social science, economy, and current affairs; inference, tone, main idea, and vocabulary questions
• Grammar — Subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, active-passive voice
• Vocabulary — Synonyms, antonyms, fill in the blanks, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution
• Verbal Ability — Sentence correction, para-jumbles (PARA), sentence completion, error spotting
• Summary and Para Completion — Choose the best concluding or bridging sentence for a paragraph

4. General Awareness

• Current Affairs (last 12 months) — National and international events, government schemes (PM Vishwakarma, PLI schemes, etc.), sports, awards
• Business & Economy — Union Budget highlights, RBI policies, GDP data, stock markets, major corporate deals
• Static GK — Indian history and polity, Constitution, geography, science and technology basics
• Management & Business Personalities — Founders of major Indian and global corporations, management terms
• International Affairs — G20, WTO, IMF, World Bank, bilateral relations involving India

5. Innovation & Entrepreneurship (Optional Section)

• Concepts of entrepreneurship — Startup ecosystem in India, DPIIT, Startup India scheme
• Innovation models — Design thinking, blue ocean strategy, disruptive innovation
• Government initiatives — Atal Innovation Mission, Mudra Yojana, Make in India
• Case-based questions on social entrepreneurship and new venture creation
• Intellectual property basics — Patents, copyrights, trademarks in Indian context

Study Schedule

Dedicate a minimum of 3–4 months to CMAT preparation. Spend the first 6 weeks on concept building — cover all four core sections thoroughly. Weeks 7–10 should focus on revision and sectional practice tests. From week 11 onward, shift entirely to full-length mock tests and analysis. Aim for at least 20 full mocks before exam day.

Mock Test Strategy

CMAT has no strict sectional time limits, so practice managing 180 minutes across 100 questions (400 marks). Attempt the Innovation & Entrepreneurship section first if you find it easy — it builds confidence. Always review incorrect answers in detail; CMAT deducts 1 mark per wrong answer, so accuracy matters more than speed. Use NTA's official mock test portal (nta.ac.in) to familiarise yourself with the exact interface.

Exam-Day Tips

Report to the centre at least 90 minutes before the scheduled time with a valid photo ID and NTA admit card. CMAT is conducted in a single session (morning), so sleep early the night before. Do not attempt new questions on exam day — trust your preparation. Read all four options before marking, as CMAT often uses close distractors in Logical Reasoning and Language Comprehension sections.

CMAT does not have a centralised national counselling body like JoSAA or MCC. Admissions based on CMAT scores are handled independently by each participating institution and, for state-quota seats, by respective state counselling authorities. The broad process is as follows:

1. Result & Scorecard Download: After NTA declares the CMAT result (typically February–March), download your official scorecard from exams.nta.ac.in/CMAT. The scorecard is valid for the current academic year only.
2. Individual Institute Applications: Most AICTE-approved MBA/PGDM colleges — including top institutes like JBIMS Mumbai, SIMSREE, K.J. Somaiya, and GIM Goa — release their own application forms separately. Apply directly on each college's official website within their stated deadlines, paying application fees ranging from ₹1,000–₹2,500 per institute.
3. State Counselling Registration: For government and state-aided colleges, register on the respective state counselling portal:
   • Maharashtra (DTE Maharashtra): dtemaharashtra.gov.in — covers JBIMS, SIMSREE, and affiliated colleges under CAP rounds
   • Gujarat (ACPC): gujacpc.nic.in — for Gujarat MBA colleges accepting CMAT
   • Delhi (IPU CET/CMAT): ipu.admissions.nic.in — some IP University colleges accept CMAT scores
   • Other states: Check the respective state's Technical Education Department portal
4. Choice Filling & Locking: In state CAP rounds (e.g., DTE Maharashtra), log in to the portal and fill your college and course preferences in order of priority. Lock choices before the deadline — changes are not permitted after locking.
5. Seat Allotment Rounds: Most state counsellings conduct 2–3 allotment rounds (CAP Round I, II, and Institute Level). Accept your allotted seat online within the specified window to proceed.
6. Document Verification: Report to the allotted college or a designated Facilitation Centre with originals and self-attested copies of: CMAT scorecard, Class 10 & 12 marksheets, graduation degree/provisional certificate, caste certificate (if applicable), domicile certificate, Aadhaar card, and passport-size photographs.
7. Fee Payment & Reporting: Pay the first-year tuition fee (online or DD as specified) to confirm admission. Collect your admission letter and report to the college on the designated date to complete enrollment formalities.

Candidates are advised to simultaneously apply to multiple colleges and track each institute's GD-PI/WAT schedule, as these rounds typically run parallel to counselling during March–June 2025.
