About JEE Main

JEE Main is one of the most competitive engineering entrance examinations in India, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It serves as the primary gateway for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions across the country. The exam is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode twice a year, giving students two opportunities to improve their scores. The examination tests candidates on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the 10+2 level. Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech admission, while Paper 2A is for B.Arch and Paper 2B is for B.Planning. The best of the two attempts is considered for ranking purposes. JEE Main also serves as the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which is the gateway to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top 2,50,000 candidates from JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. A minimum aggregate of 75% marks (65% for SC/ST candidates) in the qualifying examination is required. Candidates can attempt JEE Main for three consecutive years after passing their 12th examination. There is no age limit for appearing in JEE Main.

JEE Main Exam Pattern

Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech): 90 questions (75 to attempt) — 30 each from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject has 20 MCQs (+4/-1 marking) and 10 numerical value questions (5 to attempt, +4/0 marking). Total marks: 300.

JEE Main Preparation Tips

Focus on NCERT textbooks first, then move to reference books. Solve previous year papers and take mock tests regularly. Time management is crucial during the exam.

JEE Main Counselling Process

JEE Main Counselling Overview

Admission to NITs, IIITs, and Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) through JEE Main scores is managed by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), a joint body comprising NTA, IITs, and NITs. For state engineering colleges, separate state-level counselling authorities operate (e.g., JAC Delhi, MHT-CET Cell Maharashtra, TANCET in Tamil Nadu).

  1. Step 1 — Result & Score Declaration: NTA releases JEE Main Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April) scores separately. The best of the two NTA Scores is used for merit ranking. JoSAA counselling begins after JEE Advanced results (for IIT seats) in June.
  2. Step 2 — JoSAA Registration: Eligible candidates register on the JoSAA portal (josaa.nic.in) using their JEE Main/Advanced application number and password. Registration is mandatory even if you only want NIT/IIIT seats.
  3. Step 3 — Choice Filling & Locking: Candidates fill and prioritise their preferred institute–branch combinations from over 100 participating institutes. The order matters — JoSAA allocates based on rank and preference order. Choices must be locked before the deadline; unlocked choices are auto-locked.
  4. Step 4 — Seat Allotment Rounds: JoSAA conducts 5–6 allotment rounds. After each round, candidates can accept the seat, float (retain current seat and compete for better options in the next round), or slide (same institute, better branch if available). Candidates who reject an allotted seat without withdrawing formally forfeit their spot.
  5. Step 5 — CSAB Special Rounds: After JoSAA rounds close, CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) conducts 2 additional special rounds specifically for vacant NIT and IIIT seats, targeting candidates from remote and rural areas and those who missed JoSAA.
  6. Step 6 — Document Verification (Online/Offline): Allotted candidates must upload documents including Class 10 & 12 mark sheets, JEE Main admit card & scorecard, category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate, and passport-size photos. Some institutes require physical reporting for verification.
  7. Step 7 — Seat Acceptance Fee Payment: Pay the seat acceptance fee online (₹35,000 for General/OBC; ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD, adjustable against institute fees) within the stipulated window to confirm the allotment.
  8. Step 8 — Reporting to Institute: Physically report to the allotted institute with original documents before the deadline. Failure to report forfeits the seat and the acceptance fee.

State Counselling: For state-quota seats and state government colleges, apply separately to the respective state authority — e.g., OJEE (Odisha), UPSEE/AKTU (Uttar Pradesh), WBJEE Board (West Bengal) — using JEE Main scores as per each state's eligibility norms.
