MAT 2025 Exam Pattern Overview

The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA) in multiple modes — Paper Based Test (PBT), Computer Based Test (CBT), and Internet Based Test (IBT). The exam comprises 200 objective-type multiple-choice questions divided across five sections, with a total duration of 150 minutes. Each question carries 1 mark, and there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect response. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Scoring and Negative Marking Rules

• Each correct answer: +1 mark
• Each incorrect answer: −0.25 marks (25% negative marking)
• Unanswered questions: No penalty
• Composite score is calculated out of 800 scaled score; percentile is reported separately
• Scores from the Indian & Global Environment section are generally not considered by most B-schools for final percentile calculation — only the first four sections contribute to the 160-question scaled score

Important Notes

Candidates can appear in multiple MAT sessions in the same year (PBT, CBT, and IBT are conducted separately). The exam is conducted four times a year — February, May, September, and December. IBT is conducted on multiple dates per session. The question paper is only in English. No calculators or electronic devices are permitted in PBT/CBT modes.

Understand the MAT Exam Pattern

MAT consists of five sections: Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, and Indian and Global Environment. Each section carries 40 questions for a total of 200 questions (200 marks). Only the first four sections (160 questions) are used for the scaled score out of 800; the Indian and Global Environment section is not counted in the final MAT score.

Build a Structured Study Schedule

Dedicate 3–4 months for serious preparation. Spend the first month reviewing concepts in all five sections. Allocate the second month to section-wise practice with timed sets. In the third month, shift to full-length mock tests — attempt at least 10–12 full mocks before the exam. Reserve the final two weeks for revision, error analysis, and GK updates.

Mock Test Strategy

MAT is offered in Paper-Based Test (PBT), Computer-Based Test (CBT), and Internet-Based Test (IBT) modes in 2024–25. Practice mocks in the same mode you have registered for. Analyse each mock for section-wise accuracy and attempt order. Most toppers attempt Data Analysis, Mathematical Skills, and Reasoning first to maximize the scoring sections early.

Focus on High-Weightage Topics

• Mathematical Skills: Number Systems, Percentages, Profit & Loss, Time-Speed-Distance, Geometry, Algebra.
• Data Analysis: Tables, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Caselets, Data Sufficiency.
• Reasoning: Syllogisms, Blood Relations, Coding-Decoding, Series, Puzzles, Statement-Assumption.
• Language Comprehension: Reading Comprehension passages, Para Jumbles, Fill in the Blanks, Vocabulary.

Manage Negative Marking

MAT deducts 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Attempt only questions you are 80%+ confident about. In Language Comprehension and GK, avoid guesswork entirely. Target 120–130 correct attempts for a competitive percentile above 85.

Exam-Day Tips

Carry your AIMA-issued admit card and a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, or passport) to the exam centre. For IBT, ensure a stable internet connection, a working webcam, and a distraction-free room. Do not skip the Indian & Global Environment section entirely — even though it is not scored, leaving it blank wastes time you can use to review flagged questions in other sections.

Unlike JEE (JoSAA) or NEET (MCC), MAT does not have a centralised counselling authority. Each participating institution conducts its own independent admission process based on the MAT score. AIMA releases the score card and percentile; individual B-schools then invite shortlisted candidates for their own selection rounds.

1. Score Declaration & Score Card Download: AIMA publishes MAT results within 3–4 weeks of the exam on the official AIMA portal (mat.aima.in). Download your score card, which contains your raw score, scaled score (out of 800), and section-wise percentile.
2. Research Participating Institutes: AIMA maintains a list of 600+ AIMA-affiliated B-schools that accept MAT scores, including AIMS Institutes, BIMTECH, XIME, IPE Hyderabad, IMS Ghaziabad, and Amity University campuses. Check each institute's official website for their MAT cutoff percentile (typically 50–85 depending on the tier).
3. Apply to Individual Institutes: Submit separate applications (along with the MAT score card, 10th/12th marksheets, graduation certificates, and work experience proof if applicable) to each shortlisted institute. Application fees range from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per institute. Many accept applications via the AIMA common application form.
4. Group Discussion (GD) & Personal Interview (PI): Shortlisted candidates are called for GD/PI rounds conducted by the respective institute. Some institutes also include a Written Ability Test (WAT). Prepare current business affairs and your academic background thoroughly for this stage.
5. Merit List & Offer Letter: Based on MAT score, GD/PI performance, academic record, and work experience, institutes release merit lists and send offer letters. Multiple offer letters may be received; candidates must accept one within the stipulated deadline (usually 7–15 days).
6. Document Verification: Submit original documents — MAT score card, Class 10 & 12 certificates, graduation degree/provisional certificate, category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL if applicable), and passport-size photographs — at the institute's admission office or via online portal.
7. Fee Payment & Enrollment: Pay the first-semester or full-year tuition fee (as specified by the institute) to confirm enrollment. Fee payment deadlines are strict; missing them forfeits your seat. Obtain a fee receipt and enrollment confirmation from the institute to complete the admission process.

For state-government affiliated institutes that accept MAT, check the respective State Management Quota counselling (e.g., Karnataka PGCET, Maharashtra MBA CET cell) as they may have separate seat-allotment rounds even for MAT-qualified candidates.
