UCEED Eligibility Criteria
UCEED Exam Pattern
UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) is conducted by IIT Bombay in online (computer-based) mode. The examination is divided into two parts: Part A (computer-based, 180 minutes, 300 marks) and Part B (sketching/drawing test, 60 minutes, 60 marks). Part A is used for merit ranking; Part B is qualifying in nature and evaluated only for candidates who clear the Part A cutoff.
Part A — Section-wise Breakdown
| Section | Question Type | No. of Questions | Marks per Question | Total Marks | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | Numerical Answer Type (NAT) | 18 | 4 | 72 | None |
| Section 2 | Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) | 18 | 4 | 72 | None (partial credit possible) |
| Section 3 | Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) | 54 | 3 | 162 | −1 per wrong answer |
Negative Marking Rules
- Negative marking applies only to Section 3 (MCQ): −1 mark for each incorrect response.
- Section 1 (NAT) and Section 2 (MSQ) carry no negative marking.
- For MSQ, if any correct option is missed or any wrong option is selected, no marks are awarded — but no marks are deducted either.
- Unattempted questions attract zero marks across all sections.
Subjects Tested
- Visualization and Spatial Ability
- Observation and Design Sensitivity
- Environmental and Social Awareness
- Analytical and Logical Reasoning
- Language and Creativity
- Design Thinking and Problem Solving
Part B requires candidates to produce hand-drawn sketches on paper provided at the exam centre. It tests raw design ability, imagination, and sketching skill. Scores from Part A alone determine the UCEED merit rank list; Part B is a qualifying threshold.

UCEED Preparation Tips
Understand the UCEED Exam Structure
UCEED consists of two parts: Part A (computer-based, 240 marks) covering Visualization & Spatial Ability, Observation & Design Sensibility, Environmental & Social Awareness, Analytical & Logical Reasoning, Language & Creativity, and Design Thinking; and Part B (pen-and-paper drawing test, 60 marks). Understand the marking scheme carefully — Part A has NAT (Numerical Answer Type), MSQ (Multiple Select Questions), and MCQ sections with differential negative marking. Only MCQs carry negative marks (−0.71 per wrong answer).
Recommended Books by Topic
- Visualization & Spatial Ability: R.S. Aggarwal's Non-Verbal Reasoning, and IIT Bombay's official UCEED sample papers
- Design Sensibility & Awareness: The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman; Universal Principles of Design by Lidwell, Holden & Butler
- Drawing & Sketching (Part B): Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards; practice with Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson
- General Awareness: Read design-focused publications like Domus, Dezeen, and follow Indian design studios and award-winning products
- Logical Reasoning: Arihant's Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning for pattern recognition exercises
Build a Structured Study Schedule
Dedicate 4–5 hours daily across a 6-month preparation window. Allocate the first two months to strengthening visualization and sketching fundamentals. Months 3–4 should focus on design awareness — study Bauhaus principles, Indian craft traditions, ergonomics, and typography. Reserve the final two months for full-length mock tests and revision. Spend at least 30 minutes daily sketching everyday objects from multiple angles to sharpen Part B performance.
Focus on High-Weightage Topics
- Visualization: 3D rotation, unfolding of nets, mirror images, and embedded figures are frequently tested
- Design Sensibility: product design principles, colour theory, Gestalt principles, and Indian design icons (e.g., NID, NIFT, Eames India Report)
- Environmental Awareness: sustainable design, accessibility (universal design standards), and current design trends in India
- Language & Creativity: spot the odd one out in image sequences; logical sequencing of visual stories
Leverage Official Mock Tests and Previous Papers
IIT Bombay releases official UCEED mock tests on the exam portal (uceed.iitb.ac.in). Solve at least the last 5 years of UCEED question papers under timed conditions. The 2019–2024 papers are available on the official website. Analyse your errors after each mock — most students lose marks in MSQ questions by selecting partially correct options, which attract negative marking.
Part B Drawing Strategy
Part B requires sketching within a fixed time. Practise quick ideation sketches (2–5 minutes), detailed product rendering (10–15 minutes), and perspective drawing daily. Focus on line weight control, annotation, and labelling your sketches clearly. IIT Bombay evaluates creativity, feasibility, and visual communication — not just artistic ability. Carry your own HB, 2B, and 4B pencils on exam day as per the admit card instructions.
Exam-Day Tips
- Attempt NAT questions first — they carry no negative marking and are often more straightforward
- Skip and flag MCQs you are unsure about; return to them only if time permits
- For Part B, read the prompt fully before drawing — underlining key requirements avoids missing evaluation criteria
- Carry valid photo ID, admit card, and approved stationery (geometry set, pencils, eraser) as specified by IIT Bombay
- The exam centre opens 90 minutes before start time; arrive early to avoid technical check delays
UCEED Counselling Process
UCEED counselling and seat allotment for B.Des programmes is conducted centrally by IIT Bombay (the organizing institute) through the official UCEED portal at uceed.iitb.ac.in. It is entirely separate from JoSAA and is not linked to JEE Advanced or JEE Main counselling.
- Result Declaration & Score Card Download: UCEED 2025 results are declared on the official portal. Qualified candidates must download their scorecards and note their All India Rank (AIR). Candidates must clear both Part A and Part B cutoffs independently to be eligible for admission.
- Online Registration for Counselling: Eligible candidates register on the UCEED counselling portal within the notified window (typically March–April). Registration requires payment of a non-refundable registration fee (approximately ₹2,000 for General/OBC; ₹1,000 for SC/ST/PwD). Foreign nationals apply separately through DASA.
- Choice Filling and Locking: Candidates fill and lock their preferred B.Des programmes across participating institutes in order of preference. Participating institutes for UCEED 2024–25 include: IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, and IIITDM Jabalpur. Seats are categorized by category (General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and PwD sub-quota.
- Seat Allotment Rounds: IIT Bombay conducts multiple rounds of seat allotment (typically 3–4 rounds). Allotment is based on AIR, category, and choices filled. After each round, candidates must log in to either accept & freeze, accept & upgrade (remain in pool for better choice), or withdraw.
- Acceptance Fee Payment: Allotted candidates must pay the acceptance/seat booking fee online within 2–3 days of each allotment round to secure the seat. Failure to pay forfeits the allotment. The fee (approximately ₹10,000–₹20,000 depending on institute) is adjusted against the first-semester tuition fee.
- Document Verification: Candidates report to their allotted institute (or complete online verification as per institute norms) with originals and self-attested copies of: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates, UCEED 2025 scorecard and admit card, category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate, valid photo ID, and recent passport-size photographs.
- Reporting and Admission: After document verification, candidates complete the remaining fee payment (first-semester fees) and formally report to the institute by the notified date to confirm admission. Failure to report results in automatic seat cancellation and the seat is offered in subsequent rounds or through spot allotment if conducted.
Important: UCEED does not use JoSAA, MCC, or CSAB portals. All communications — results, allotment letters, fee receipts — are through the UCEED portal only. Candidates are advised to regularly check uceed.iitb.ac.in and their registered email during the counselling period.
