Studying MFA at a different institution than your BFA can expose you to new artistic perspectives, faculty, and critique traditions. However, if your BFA institution offers strong MFA supervision in your area, continuity can deepen your practice. Consider what will challenge and grow your art most.

Personal studio space is the most critical facility for MFA. Also important: access to specialised workshops (printmaking press, ceramics kiln, foundry), digital fabrication labs, exhibition spaces, art library, and spaces for critiques and seminars.

Yes, many MFA programmes allow students to shift specialisations if they demonstrate aptitude in the new medium through their portfolio. A painter may transition to sculpture, or an applied artist to fine art. Discuss your intent with the admissions committee during the application process.
