Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is India's premier research university, offering programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across 40+ departments. Established in 1909 and holding NAAC A++ accreditation, IISc combines rigorous academics with world-class research. The institute offers B.S. Undergraduate Programme - B.S. (Research)

IISc offers a single 4-year undergraduate programme: the Bachelor of Science (Research). This is not a conventional B.Tech or B.Sc - it is a research-intensive degree with six majors: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics, and Physics. Students engage in original research from their second year, with access to IISc's advanced laboratories and faculty mentorship.

Admission is through JEE Main (for Physical/Mathematical/Engineering Sciences) or NEET UG (for Biological Sciences). Note: The KVPY fellowship, which was the former admission route, was discontinued in 2022. Approximately 180 seats are available across all majors.

Postgraduate Programmes

IISc offers four Master's-level programmes:

• M.Tech (2 years) - 17+ specializations across Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science & Automation, Computational & Data Science, Electrical Communication, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Systems, Materials, Mechanical, Nano Science, Product Design & Manufacturing, and more. Admission via GATE score. ~500 seats total.
• M.Sc (2 years) - Available in select science departments. Admission via IIT JAM or IISc Entrance Test. ~200 seats.
• M.Des (2 years) - Product Design & Engineering at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM). Admission via GATE or CEED. ~20 seats.
• M.Mgt (2 years) - Master of Management (not an MBA) at the Department of Management Studies. Focused on technology management. Admission via GATE + interview. ~30 seats.

Doctoral Programmes - PhD & Integrated PhD

As a research-first institution, doctoral programmes are IISc's core strength. Over 40 departments across six divisions offer PhD and Integrated PhD programmes:

• PhD (4-6 years) - For candidates with a Master's degree (M.E./M.Tech/M.Sc/M.Des). Admission through valid GATE/NET/JEST scores followed by an IISc departmental interview. All PhD scholars receive monthly fellowships (₹31,000-37,000/month as JRF/SRF).
• Integrated PhD (5-6 years) - For candidates with a Bachelor's degree (B.Sc/B.E./B.Tech). Includes Master's-level coursework followed by research. Admission via GATE/JAM/JEST/NET + interview. Available in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical, and Earth Sciences.

PhD scholars at IISc benefit from full tuition waiver, monthly stipend, contingency grants, and access to world-class research infrastructure. IISc produces ~500 doctoral graduates annually.
