Programs and Courses at ICT Mumbai

The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai is a deemed-to-be university with a rare specialisation in chemical engineering, chemical technology and pharmaceutical sciences. Founded on 1 October 1933 as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) of the University of Mumbai, it was granted deemed university status in 2008 and is widely described as the only state-funded deemed university of its kind in India. It received the Maharashtra government's Elite Status and Centre of Excellence recognition in 2012, and Category-1 graded autonomy from the UGC and the Ministry of Education in February 2018. ICT's course catalogue spans undergraduate engineering and pharmacy, a broad spread of postgraduate programs, and doctoral research across its specialised departments.

The table below summarises the major programs offered, with their total course fees (as recorded in our database), duration, and the entrance examinations accepted for admission. Fees shown are the full-program figures stored for this institution.

Program Total Fee Duration Accepted Exams
B.Tech Rs. 7,20,000 4 years JEE Main / MHT CET
B.Pharm Rs. 3,80,000 4 years MHT CET
M.Tech Rs. 1,70,000 2 years GATE
M.Sc Not available 2 years Merit / entrance based
M.Pharm Not available 2 years GPAT
PhD Not available Variable Written test + interview

B.Tech Programs

The 4-year, full-time B.Tech is ICT's flagship undergraduate offering, delivered across roughly eight to nine specialisations including Chemical Engineering, Dyestuff Technology, Fibres and Textile Processing Technology, Food Engineering and Technology, Oils, Oleochemicals and Surfactants Technology, Polymer Engineering and Technology, Surface Coating Technology, Pharmaceuticals Chemistry and Technology, and Perfumery and Flavour Technology. The total program fee in our database is Rs. 7,20,000.

Eligibility and Admission

Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and a minimum 50% aggregate (45% for reserved categories), along with a valid JEE Main or MHT CET score. Admission follows the Maharashtra Common Admission Process (CAP): about 70% of the B.Tech seats are reserved for Maharashtra-domicile students and the remaining 30% are open to all-India candidates. Reported B.Tech intake at ICT is in the order of 1,200 admissions processed in the 2025 cycle through JEE Main and MHT CET.

B.Pharm Program

The Bachelor of Pharmacy is a 4-year full-time undergraduate program run by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, one of ICT's most highly regarded departments. The total program fee recorded in our database is Rs. 3,80,000.

Eligibility and Admission

Applicants need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology and a valid MHT CET score. Admission is conducted through the Maharashtra CAP process on the basis of MHT CET (PCB) ranks, with a reported sanctioned intake of 60 seats. ICT's pharmacy strength is reflected in its NIRF 2024 Pharmacy ranking of 5 in India, placing it among the top five pharmacy institutions nationally.

M.Tech Programs

The 2-year M.Tech program is offered across the institute's engineering and technology departments, with specialisations such as Food Engineering and Technology, Dyestuff Technology, Fibres and Textile Processing Technology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Oils, Oleochemicals and Surfactants Technology, Polymer Engineering and Technology, Surface Coating Technology, and Perfumery and Flavour Technology. The total program fee in our database is Rs. 1,70,000, making it notably affordable for a deemed university of this calibre.

Eligibility and Admission

Candidates must hold a B.E or B.Tech in a relevant field with a minimum 60% aggregate and a valid GATE score. For select interdisciplinary M.Tech streams such as Bioprocess Technology, Food Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, GAT-B scores are also considered.

M.Sc Program

The 2-year M.Sc is offered in science disciplines aligned to ICT's research strengths. Eligibility requires a B.Sc in a relevant field (Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics) with a minimum 55% aggregate. Admission is merit and entrance based. The total fee for this program is not available in our records and is best confirmed with the institute directly.

M.Pharm Program

The 2-year M.Pharm is offered by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology with a reported intake of around 30 seats, distributed across specialisations such as Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Medicinal Natural Products. Eligibility requires a B.Pharm with a minimum 60% aggregate and a valid GPAT score. The fee for this program is not available in our database.

PhD and Doctoral Research

ICT is research-intensive, and its doctoral program is central to its identity as a Category-1 graded-autonomy institution. Eligibility requires a Master's degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks, followed by a written test and an interview. Program fees are not available in our records. Doctoral candidates work within ICT's specialised departments spanning chemical engineering, chemical technology and pharmaceutical sciences.

Placements Across Programs

Placement outcomes give applicants a useful lens on each program's return on investment. As per data submitted to NIRF, the median B.Tech placement package for the 2024 cycle was about Rs. 9 LPA, while the M.Tech median stood at around Rs. 7 LPA. Reported figures indicate roughly 445 students placed in the relevant cycle, with about 95% of eligible students securing offers and an average package near Rs. 6 to 10 LPA depending on program and source. Recruiters span the chemical, FMCG and pharmaceutical sectors, including Asian Paints, Godrej, Reliance, Lupin, Dr. Reddy's, IPCA, Parle, Amul and Sula.

How ICT Compares With Similar Institutions

For students weighing specialised chemical and pharmaceutical institutions, the comparison below places ICT alongside peer institutes on national rankings and fee positioning. Figures are indicative and based on publicly reported NIRF standings.

Institution NIRF Pharmacy 2024 Focus Area B.Tech Fee Positioning
Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai Rank 5 Chemical engineering and pharmacy Rs. 7,20,000 (total)
Jamia Hamdard, Delhi Top 3 band Pharmacy and health sciences Higher private-fee band
Panjab University, Chandigarh Top 3 band Pharmacy and sciences Lower public-fee band
BITS Pilani Top 10 band Engineering and pharmacy Significantly higher

ICT's distinctive advantage is the combination of a top-5 NIRF pharmacy position, an Engineering NIRF standing of around 41 in 2024, deep industry linkages in chemicals and pharma, and a comparatively moderate fee structure for a deemed university. Students targeting chemical engineering, pharmaceutical technology or allied fields should verify the latest seat matrix, cutoffs and exact fee components on the official ICT admissions portal before applying, since intake and fee details are revised each admission cycle.
