Admission Process, Eligibility & Entrance Exams at NIT Calicut
National Institute of Technology Calicut, one of India's premier government engineering institutions, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs through a merit-based admission system. Admission to undergraduate programs is conducted primarily through the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main), followed by seat allocation via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counseling process. Candidates qualify based on their JEE Main scores and are ranked accordingly, with seat allocation occurring through multiple counseling rounds where students exercise their choice of branch and institute based on their rank and category eligibility.
To be eligible for NIT Calicut's undergraduate engineering programs, candidates must have passed 12th grade (or equivalent) from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. The institute admits Indian citizens, NRIs, and foreign nationals across various quota categories including General, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL), in accordance with national admission regulations. State-level counseling processes may also be applicable in certain cases as per regulatory requirements.
Admission schedules, counseling dates, and merit cutoff lists are announced annually through the official JoSAA portal. Prospective students should regularly check the JoSAA website and NIT Calicut's official admissions portal for updates on seat allocation timelines, document verification procedures, and fee payment deadlines. For postgraduate programs including M.Tech and M.S. courses, admission is based on qualifying entrance examinations such as GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) or institution-specific entrance tests, depending on the program.
Eligibility Criteria
B.Tech: Candidates must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects from a recognized board with a minimum of 75% aggregate (70% for SC/ST candidates). Admission is based on JEE Main scores followed by JOSAA/CSAB counselling. Candidates must appear for JEE Main examination in the year of admission or the preceding year.
M.Tech: Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or an equivalent qualification with a minimum of 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST candidates). Admission is through GATE examination followed by COAP/CCMT counselling. Valid GATE score in relevant stream is mandatory.
M.Sc: Bachelor's degree in the relevant science discipline with a minimum of 50% aggregate. Admission may be based on merit or entrance examination as per institute guidelines.
MBA: Bachelor's degree from a recognized university with minimum 50% marks. Valid GMAT or CAT score and academic/professional merit are considered during selection.
