Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about National Institute of Technology Silchar
Frequently Asked Questions
Admission to B.Tech programs at NIT Silchar is based on the JEE Main score, followed by counselling through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). Candidates must qualify JEE Main and meet the eligibility of passing Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Seat allocation follows the home-state and other-state quota, with 50% of seats reserved for candidates from Assam.
Cutoffs vary by branch and category each year. In the 2025 JoSAA counselling, the closing rank for B.Tech CSE was around 23,366 and for ECE around 40,328 in the final round. Computer Science and Electronics branches close at the lowest (most competitive) ranks, while core branches like Civil and Mechanical close at higher ranks.
The total B.Tech tuition fee is roughly ₹5 to ₹7 lakh for the full four-year duration, paid semester-wise, with hostel charges of around ₹30,000-₹45,000 per year on top. The exact amount depends on family income, since the institute offers tuition fee remission to economically weaker students. Fee details are published on the official NIT Silchar website each year.
In the 2024 placement season, NIT Silchar recorded an average package of about ₹13.3-13.5 LPA and a highest package of ₹52.89 LPA offered by Amazon. The median package was around ₹10 LPA, and over 50 offers exceeded ₹20 LPA. Around 200 companies participated, making over 600 job offers.
Top recruiters include Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Adobe, LinkedIn, Goldman Sachs, ICICI Bank, Cognizant, Accenture, Schneider Electric, Amdocs and CGI, among others. The companies span technology, finance, consulting and core engineering sectors. The Training and Placement Cell organizes the recruitment drives on campus.
In NIRF 2024, NIT Silchar was ranked 40th in the Engineering category and 92nd in the Overall category. In NIRF 2025, it was placed around 50th in Engineering and 97th in the Overall category. It is one of the prominent NITs in the North-East region of India.
NIT Silchar offers B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The institute also offers M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA and Ph.D programs across its departments. CSE and ECE are the most sought-after branches.
NIT Silchar offers roughly 880+ B.Tech seats across its six engineering branches, with each branch having around 140+ seats. Seats are distributed under home-state (Assam) and all-India quotas, with reservations applied for OBC-NCL (27%), SC (15%), ST (7.5%) and EWS categories. The intake is filled through JoSAA counselling.
The campus has around 9 boys' hostels and 3 girls' hostels, plus separate accommodation for married PG students and foreign students. Hostels provide beds, study tables, LAN/Wi-Fi connectivity and mess facilities, with single, double and triple-sharing rooms. First-year students typically share rooms, while single rooms are allotted to seniors based on CGPA.
Hostel accommodation is provided to students on campus, and the hostel fees are approximately ₹30,000-₹45,000 per year, which includes accommodation and basic amenities (mess charges are additional). Each hostel block has its own mess and a private canteen. The campus is residential, so most students stay in hostels.
M.Tech admission at NIT Silchar is based on a valid GATE score, followed by counselling through CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech). Candidates need a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD) in the relevant discipline. GATE-qualified students sponsored by the institute receive a monthly MHRD stipend of around ₹12,400.
NIT Silchar offers Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarships, tuition fee remission for economically weaker students, and SC/ST scholarships. Students with family income below ₹1 lakh per year can get 100% tuition fee remission, while those between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh get two-thirds remission. Additional external scholarships such as the Bharti Infratel Scholarship Program for students with disabilities in North-East INIs are also available.
NIT Silchar is located about 12 kilometers from Silchar city on the Silchar-Hailakandi road in the Barak Valley region of Assam. The campus spans approximately 625 acres and is fully residential. It is set in a scenic, hilly environment with academic blocks, hostels, staff quarters and recreational facilities.
NIT Silchar was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC) in Assam. In 2002, it was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology with Deemed University status. It is now an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Campus life is vibrant with technical and cultural festivals, numerous student clubs, sports facilities and a central library. The institute hosts annual fests and provides amenities like a gymnasium, auditorium, sports grounds, canteens and a medical center. The residential and remote campus encourages a close-knit student community.
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) consistently records the best placement outcomes, with an average package of around ₹16.7 LPA in the 2024 season. Electronics branches also perform strongly, while core branches like Mechanical and Civil have lower averages. CSE and ECE students attract the top tech recruiters.
Graduates typically take up roles in software development, core engineering, finance and consulting with leading companies, while a significant number pursue higher studies (M.Tech, MS abroad, MBA) or appear for GATE and civil services. The strong alumni network across the PAN-NIT community supports career growth. Many graduates also join PSUs through GATE-based recruitment.
Around 200 companies participated in the 2024 placement drive, collectively making over 600 job offers across various roles. The Training and Placement Cell coordinates pre-placement talks, internships and final recruitment. A large share of eligible students from CSE and ECE branches secured placements.
Candidates must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology, and must qualify JEE Main. General category students generally need at least 75% in Class 12 (or be in the top 20 percentile of their board), with relaxation for reserved categories. Final selection is through JoSAA counselling based on JEE Main rank.
The total M.Tech fee at NIT Silchar is approximately ₹1.7 lakh for the entire two-year program, paid semester-wise. Hostel and mess charges are additional. GATE-qualified, institute-sponsored students receive a monthly stipend, which substantially offsets the cost of study.
