Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research: Overview, Courses, Fees, Rankings & Placements 2026

What is Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research?

The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh is an autonomous government medical institute established in 1962 and declared an Institute of National Importance under the PGIMER Act, 1966 (effective 1967), functioning directly under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Located on a 277-acre campus in Sector-12, Chandigarh, it is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Dental Council of India (DCI) and serves as a WHO Collaborating Centre. PGIMER is best known as one of India's premier tertiary-care, postgraduate and super-specialty teaching hospitals, ranked No. 2 in the country for medicine by NIRF for the eighth consecutive year in 2025. It draws aspirants from across the nation, with roughly 89% of its students coming from outside Chandigarh.

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Key Facts (2026)

The table below condenses the essential profile of PGIMER Chandigarh into a single snapshot, answering the most common first question an aspirant has: what kind of institute is this, how large is it, and what is its standing. Read it top to bottom to gauge scale (campus, courses, faculty) and credibility (recognitions and NIRF status) before diving into course and fee detail. Every figure reflects the latest 2025-2026 data published by the institute and NIRF.

Parameter Detail
Established 1962 (Institute of National Importance since 1967)
Type Government, autonomous, Institute of National Importance
Affiliation / Approvals Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; recognised by NMC and DCI; WHO Collaborating Centre
Campus Size 277 acres, Sector-12, Chandigarh
Total Courses 9 degrees across roughly 87 courses (UG, PG, super-specialty and doctoral)
NIRF Medical Rank 2025 #2 (score 82.58)
NIRF Overall Rank 2025 #33 (score 59.15)
Faculty Strength About 509 faculty members

The takeaway is that PGIMER is not a conventional affiliating university but a self-standing Institute of National Importance, putting it in the same tier as AIIMS and JIPMER. Its consistent No. 2 NIRF medical rank and No. 33 overall placement in 2025 confirm sustained, research-driven excellence rather than a one-year spike, while the 277-acre campus and 509-strong faculty signal genuine clinical and academic depth.

Why Choose Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research?

PGIMER Chandigarh stands out for reasons that are specific and measurable, not generic prestige:

  • Top-2 medical ranking, eight years running. PGIMER held NIRF Medical Rank #2 in both 2024 (score 80.83) and 2025 (score 82.58), trailing only AIIMS New Delhi, a feat it has now repeated for eight consecutive years.
  • National-importance status with super-specialty focus. As an autonomous INI, it offers advanced DM and MCh super-specialty programmes alongside MD/MS, making it a destination for India's most competitive postgraduate medicine.
  • Entrance through the toughest national tests. PG and super-specialty seats are filled via INI CET (conducted by AIIMS New Delhi), where general-category MD/MS seats typically demand a rank inside the top 150-300, and branches like Radiology or Dermatology need a top-50 rank.
  • Strong PG outcomes. Per NIRF 2025 placement data, the median package for the PG 3-year cohort reached about Rs 35 LPA, with recruiters including Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospital, AIIMS and Medanta.
  • Negligible tuition for a government institute. Flagship MD/MS programmes cost only Rs 12,410 in tuition, and B.Sc Nursing just Rs 10,500, keeping world-class training accessible.
  • Research and clinical scale. A 277-acre campus, 509 faculty and tertiary-care hospital infrastructure underpin its research output and patient-facing training.

Courses, Fees & Rankings at a Glance

PGIMER Chandigarh runs a medicine-centric portfolio spanning undergraduate paramedical and nursing degrees through to MD/MS, MDS, super-specialty DM/MCh and PhD programmes. The table below summarises flagship programmes with their indicative tuition fee, duration and the gateway exam, so you can quickly match a programme to its admission route. Note the institute's headline credential alongside it: a No. 2 NIRF Medical rank in 2025. For seat-wise eligibility and counselling cut-offs, refer to the dedicated Courses and Admissions tabs.

Programme Duration Indicative Tuition Fee Entrance Exam Institute Top Rank
MD 3 years Rs 12,410 INI CET NIRF Medical #2 (2025)
MS 3 years Rs 12,410 INI CET NIRF Medical #2 (2025)
MDS 3 years Rs 11,910 INI CET NIRF Medical #2 (2025)
DM / MCh 3 years Not available INI CET NIRF Medical #2 (2025)
B.Sc Nursing 4 years Rs 10,500 PGIMER B.Sc Nursing Entrance Exam NIRF Overall #33 (2025)
PhD 3 years Not available PGIMER Entrance Exam NIRF Overall #33 (2025)

The clear pattern is that PGIMER charges almost nominal government tuition (Rs 10,500 to Rs 12,410 across its flagship medical and nursing degrees) while delivering a top-2 national medical ranking, an exceptional value proposition. The split in admission routes also matters: clinical PG and super-specialty seats run exclusively through INI CET, whereas nursing, paramedical and doctoral entries use PGIMER's own entrance tests. Aspirants should map their target programme to the correct exam early.

Placement & Admission Snapshot

On the placement front, PGIMER Chandigarh's PG 3-year cohort recorded a median package of about Rs 35 LPA per NIRF 2025 data, while the PG 2-year cohort's median stood near Rs 13.5 LPA and the UG 4-year cohort near Rs 12 LPA. Top recruiters and onward destinations include Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospital, AIIMS and Medanta. On admissions, the institute is strictly entrance-based: MD, MS, MDS, DM and MCh seats are allotted through INI CET (conducted by AIIMS New Delhi, held twice a year), followed by counselling, while B.Sc Nursing, B.Sc, M.Sc, MPH, M.Sc Nursing and PhD intake is governed by PGIMER's own entrance examinations.

Metric (2025) Figure
PG 3-year median package About Rs 35 LPA
PG 2-year median package About Rs 13.5 LPA
UG 4-year median package About Rs 12 LPA
Primary PG admission route INI CET + counselling

The figures confirm that PGIMER's strongest earning outcomes sit at the postgraduate and super-specialty level, where the Rs 35 LPA median reflects the demand for its specialist clinicians. For an aspirant, the practical message is that the gateway is competitive rather than merit-list based on Class 12 marks: securing a strong INI CET rank is the single most decisive step toward an MD, MS or super-specialty seat here.

Frequently Asked Questions: Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Overview 2026

Is Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research good?

Yes, PGIMER Chandigarh is among the best medical institutes in India, ranked No. 2 in NIRF Medical 2025 with a score of 82.58, a position it has held for eight consecutive years behind only AIIMS New Delhi. It is an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, recognised by the NMC and DCI, and ranked #33 overall in NIRF 2025. Its combination of research depth, super-specialty training and tertiary-care patient volume makes it a top choice for postgraduate medicine.

What is PGIMER Chandigarh known for?

PGIMER Chandigarh is known for being a premier postgraduate and super-specialty medical institute and one of North India's leading tertiary-care hospitals. Established in 1962 and an Institute of National Importance since 1967, it is most renowned for its MD/MS, DM and MCh programmes and its consistent NIRF Medical Rank #2 (2024 and 2025). It is also a WHO Collaborating Centre, reflecting its standing in clinical research, advanced specialty care and medical education on a 277-acre Sector-12 campus.

What courses does PGIMER Chandigarh offer?

Clinical PG and super-specialty seats are filled through INI CET, while nursing, paramedical and doctoral programmes use PGIMER's own entrance examinations.

What is the total fee at PGIMER Chandigarh?

Tuition fees at PGIMER Chandigarh are minimal because it is a central government institute. MD and MS cost about Rs 12,410, MDS about Rs 11,910 and B.Sc Nursing about Rs 10,500 in tuition. These are among the lowest fees for top-tier medical programmes in India, reflecting heavy government subsidy. Fees for several programmes such as DM, MCh, PhD and certain paramedical courses are notified separately in the official prospectus, so applicants should confirm the latest schedule on the PGIMER website before applying.

What is the NIRF and NAAC status of PGIMER Chandigarh?

PGIMER Chandigarh is ranked No. 2 in NIRF Medical 2025 (score 82.58) and No. 33 in NIRF Overall 2025 (score 59.15), repeating its NIRF Medical Rank #2 from 2024 (score 80.83). It was also ranked #36 in the Careers360 University 2025 list. What is the average package at PGIMER Chandigarh?

Per NIRF 2025 placement data, PGIMER Chandigarh's PG 3-year cohort recorded a median package of about Rs 35 LPA, the PG 2-year cohort about Rs 13.5 LPA, and the UG 4-year cohort about Rs 12 LPA. The strongest earning outcomes are at the postgraduate and super-specialty level, reflecting national demand for PGIMER-trained specialist doctors.

Is admission to PGIMER Chandigarh merit or entrance based?

Admission to PGIMER Chandigarh is strictly entrance based. MD, MS, MDS, DM and MCh seats are allotted through INI CET, conducted by AIIMS New Delhi twice a year, followed by counselling, where general-category MD/MS seats typically require a rank within the top 150-300 and competitive branches need a top-50 rank. B.Sc Nursing, B.Sc, M.Sc, MPH, M.Sc Nursing and PhD admissions are decided through PGIMER's own entrance examinations, so a strong entrance score, not Class 12 marks alone, is decisive.
