Tips for MBA Entrance Exam Preparation

  • Start early - begin preparation at least 6-12 months before the exam date, focusing on fundamentals first.
  • Practice previous years' papers - solve past exam papers to understand the pattern, difficulty level, and frequently tested topics.
  • Apply for multiple exams - register for several relevant exams to maximize your chances of admission to a preferred college.
  • Track deadlines - keep a calendar of registration dates, admit card releases, and exam dates so you never miss a window.

MBA Entrance Exams Explained

India's MBA admission ecosystem works on a multi-exam model - no single test opens every door. The nine exams below span three tiers: broad national tests that feed hundreds of colleges, university-group tests tied to specific institute networks, and institution-targeted processes. Mapping your target colleges to the exams they require - then building preparation around their overlapping skill sets - is the most efficient strategy.

National Exams: CAT, CMAT, MAT, and ATMA

CAT (Common Admission Test), conducted every November by the IIMs, is the cornerstone of MBA admissions in India. All 21 IIMs use it as their primary filter; General category candidates need 99+ percentile for IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, and above 95 for most other IIMs. CMAT (January, NTA) is a lower-competition national exam accepted at hundreds of AICTE-approved colleges and a practical backup option alongside CAT. MAT (AIMA, four sessions per year in February, June, September, and December - available in both paper and computer modes) and ATMA (AIMS, multiple windows per year) offer the widest scheduling flexibility, making them useful if you miss the November-January peak season or need additional attempts.

University and Group Exams: XAT, SNAP, and NMAT

XAT (January, XLRI Jamshedpur) includes a dedicated Decision Making section covering business ethics and situational judgment - a section with no equivalent in CAT - alongside Verbal and Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability, and General Knowledge. It is required for XLRI's flagship BM and HRM programmes and accepted at 800+ other institutes. SNAP (December, Symbiosis International University) is the sole gateway into all 16 Symbiosis MBA institutes including SIBM Pune and SCMHRD. NMAT by GMAC (October-December) allows up to three attempts per cycle with the best score counted, making it the primary route to NMIMS Mumbai and useful at 50+ B-schools.

IIFT and TISSNET: What Has Changed

IIFT no longer conducts its own standalone exam; since 2023 it shortlists via CAT scores, with a General category cutoff typically above 98 percentile, followed by a GD and PI round. TISSNET, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences entrance test, has been discontinued. TISS now accepts CUET PG scores (NTA) for most social science programmes and CAT scores for its management programmes. Confirm the current process on the official TISS website before applying.

Preparation Tips

  • Master QA and Verbal fundamentals first - CAT, XAT, CMAT, and NMAT all test these core skills, so early work compounds across multiple exams simultaneously.
  • Prepare XAT Decision Making as a separate module - business judgment and ethical reasoning questions have no direct equivalent in standard CAT mock test materials.
  • Register for NMAT by August to lock in an early October attempt and preserve November-December windows as retake slots.
  • Allocate dedicated time to GK and Current Affairs for SNAP and CMAT - both exams carry dedicated sections on these topics that are absent from CAT.
  • Run full-length timed mocks weekly from September to build stamina and refine time management across different section formats.
  • Track registration deadlines early - most MBA entrance exam forms open in July-August and close four to six weeks before the exam date.

Always verify eligibility, registration deadlines, and cutoffs on each exam's official website before applying, as details change each cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions - MBA Entrance Exams

No single exam is mandatory nationwide. CAT is required for IIMs and most top B-schools. XAT is needed for XLRI, SNAP for Symbiosis colleges, NMAT for NMIMS, and CMAT or MAT open hundreds of other institutes. Most students apply to three to four exams to maximise their college options.

Most MBA entrance exams require a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50 percent marks from a recognised university. Final-year graduation students may apply provisionally. IIFT MBA (Business Analytics) additionally requires a mathematics or statistics background at graduation level. Age limits generally do not apply for major national exams.

CAT is widely considered the hardest, with top IIMs requiring 99+ percentile for General category candidates. XAT is comparably demanding and adds a unique Decision Making section. NMAT and SNAP are moderately challenging. CMAT, MAT, and ATMA are relatively accessible and serve well as backup exams alongside CAT.

Begin with a diagnostic mock test to identify weak areas, then build Quantitative Ability and Verbal Ability - skills shared across CAT, XAT, CMAT, and NMAT. Prepare XAT Decision Making as a dedicated module. Take weekly full-length mocks from September and follow Current Affairs regularly for SNAP and CMAT.

CAT, XAT, and SNAP scores are valid only for the current admission cycle. NMAT by GMAC scores are valid for one year from the test date, allowing use in the following admissions cycle. MAT and ATMA scores are typically accepted for the current cycle only. Confirm validity norms on each official exam website.
