About NIRF Rankings
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. QS World University Rankings are released annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Ranks shown are overall global positions for the latest available edition.
Understanding MBA College Rankings
For MBA aspirants, India's two primary ranking frameworks - NIRF (published by the Ministry of Education) and QS India (published by Quacquarelli Symonds, UK) - both rank institutions overall, not individual programmes. A college's position in either list reflects institutional standing, not MBA-specific excellence. Knowing what each score is built from turns a rank number into a genuinely useful shortlisting tool.
How NIRF Scores Are Calculated
Each NIRF score is a weighted composite of five parameters, with Teaching and Research together carrying 60% of the total. Graduation Outcomes (GO) - covering placement rate and median graduate salary - carries 20% and is the sub-score most directly tied to MBA career ROI.
| Parameter | Weight | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) | 30% | Faculty strength, student-teacher ratio, infrastructure |
| Research and Professional Practice (RP) | 30% | Publications, patents, funded research projects |
| Graduation Outcomes (GO) | 20% | Placement rate, median graduate salary, Ph.D. output |
| Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) | 10% | Regional diversity, women enrollment, economically weaker sections |
| Peer Perception (PP) | 10% | Academic peer survey from faculty and employers |
One important nuance for readers of this page: IITs listed here - IIT Madras, IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur - are ranked under the NIRF Engineering or University category (their primary NIRF submission), while IIMs such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are ranked under the NIRF Management category. These are separate peer groups with separate rank sequences, which is why duplicate rank numbers appear in the table. Scores from different NIRF categories should not be compared directly. QS India applies a single cross-institutional methodology, weighting academic and employer reputation most heavily, followed by faculty-to-student ratio, research citations and international diversity. Neither framework ranks MBA as a standalone programme.
Tips for Using Rankings in Your MBA Shortlist
- Use rank as a filter, not a final verdict. A college at NIRF rank 5 with your target specialisation and strong sector-specific placements can be a better fit than a rank 1 college that lacks those factors for your profile.
- Focus on Graduation Outcomes (GO) for MBA decisions. GO covers placement rate and median salary - the most career-relevant NIRF parameter. Two colleges at similar composite scores can differ significantly on GO alone, which matters most for MBA ROI.
- Compare fees within the same college type. Government-run NIRF-ranked colleges - IIMs, IITs and FMS Delhi - typically carry lower MBA fees than private colleges at comparable ranks, directly affecting your loan repayment timeline after graduation.
- Cross-check NIRF and QS India together. Colleges that rank consistently across both frameworks, despite their different methodological emphases, offer a stronger institutional quality signal than those appearing strongly in only one.
- Rank and admission cutoff are independent. A college ranked 6 may demand a higher CAT percentile than one ranked 3, depending on intake size and programme demand. Always verify current cutoffs directly with the college.

Frequently Asked Questions - MBA College Rankings
Among colleges in our database, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad holds NIRF rank 1 in the Management category with a score of 92.50 in NIRF 2026. This is an institution-level ranking by the Ministry of Education - NIRF does not rank MBA as a standalone programme. IIM Ahmedabad has consistently held this top Management category position across multiple consecutive years.
Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad has a NIRF score of 92.50 in NIRF 2026. This composite score is built from five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR, 30%), Research and Professional Practice (RP, 30%), Graduation Outcomes (GO, 20%), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI, 10%) and Peer Perception (PP, 10%). A score above 90 places it among India's highest-rated management institutions.
NIRF is a government framework from India's Ministry of Education, assessing institutions on teaching quality, research output, graduation outcomes, inclusivity and peer perception. QS India is published by Quacquarelli Symonds (UK), a private global body, and evaluates academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research citations and international diversity. Both are institution-level rankings - neither ranks MBA as a standalone programme.
NIRF rankings are institution-level only. The Management category ranks business schools and management institutes as institutions - it does not separately assess individual programmes like MBA, PGDM or Executive MBA. A college's NIRF rank reflects its overall standing across teaching, research, outcomes and inclusivity, not the quality of any single programme it offers.
IIM Ahmedabad is not ranked specifically for its MBA programme by NIRF or QS India. It holds NIRF rank 1 in the Management category with a score of 92.50, evaluating the institution across faculty resources, research output, placement outcomes, inclusivity and peer reputation. MBA students benefit from this institutional quality signal - a high NIRF score reflects credible faculty, research environment and graduate career outcomes across all programmes the institute offers.
