IIT Bombay Admissions: Entrance Exams and Eligibility Criteria
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay admits undergraduate students exclusively through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, one of India's most competitive engineering entrance exams. Prospective candidates must first qualify the JEE Main examination, followed by the JEE Advanced to be eligible for admission to IIT Bombay's BTech programs. The institute offers a diverse range of undergraduate engineering specializations across multiple departments, attracting top-performing students from across India.
Eligibility for IIT Bombay admissions requires candidates to have passed their Class 12 examination (or equivalent) from a recognized board in India. Candidates appearing for their final Class 12 examination are also eligible to apply for JEE Main, provided they meet the age criteria and other specified requirements set by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The JEE Advanced examination follows JEE Main, and only candidates who rank within the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main are permitted to appear for JEE Advanced and compete for admissions to IIT Bombay.
The admission process at IIT Bombay is merit-based and conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation (JoSAA) process, which is managed centrally for all IITs. After qualifying JEE Advanced, candidates participate in the seat allocation process based on their All India Rank (AIR) and preferences for programs and institutions. IIT Bombay's rigorous selection process ensures admission of highly talented students committed to pursuing excellence in engineering and technology. Prospective applicants are advised to visit the official IIT Bombay website and the Joint Entrance Examination Information Brochure for detailed information regarding admission timelines, required documents, and specific eligibility criteria.
Eligibility Criteria
Undergraduate Programmes (B.Tech, B.Arch): Candidates must have passed 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. Reserved category candidates may have relaxed eligibility criteria as per institutional and statutory norms.
Postgraduate Programmes (M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Arch): Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in the relevant engineering or science discipline from a recognized university. M.Tech admission requires a valid GATE score. M.Sc programmes accept qualified candidates based on entrance examination or merit. M.Arch requires a B.Arch degree and GATE qualification or equivalent assessment.
MBA Programme: Bachelor's degree holders from any discipline are eligible. Admission is based on performance in CAT (Common Admission Test) or GMAT, followed by Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). Relevant work experience is preferred for final selection.
