About JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination and is the sole gateway for admission to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs on a rotational basis, it is widely regarded as one of the toughest entrance examinations in the world. The exam consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), both of which are mandatory. Each paper is of 3 hours duration and tests candidates on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The question types include MCQs with single correct answer, MCQs with multiple correct answers, numerical answer type, and matching type questions. Only the top 2,50,000 candidates who qualify JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Understanding the eligibility criteria is the first step towards preparing for Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced). The exam is conducted by IIT (rotating annually) at the national level for candidates seeking admission to Engineering & Technology programmes across India. Candidates must carefully verify that they meet all requirements before filling the application form to avoid rejection at a later stage.

Candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 qualifiers of JEE Main. They should have passed Class 12 or equivalent in the current or previous year. Candidates must not have been admitted to any IIT previously. Maximum two attempts in consecutive years are allowed. Age limit: Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2002 (relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PwD).

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

Two papers of 3 hours each. Both papers have questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Various question types including single correct MCQ, multiple correct MCQ, numerical value, and matching list questions.

JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff Scores

Master the NCERT Foundation First

JEE Advanced tests conceptual depth far beyond NCERT, but NCERT forms the bedrock. Complete NCERT Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (Classes 11 & 12) thoroughly before moving to advanced references. Every derivation and example matters.

Analyse each test thoroughly — identify error patterns: conceptual gaps, silly mistakes, or time mismanagement. JEE Advanced uses multiple question types (single correct, multiple correct, integer type, matrix match) — practise all formats. Attempt previous years' papers from 2015–2024 under strict exam conditions.

Understand the Marking Scheme Deeply

JEE Advanced has a complex, question-type-specific marking scheme. Multiple correct answer questions award partial marks for partially correct responses but penalise incorrect selections. Integer-type questions carry no negative marking. Calibrate your attempt strategy accordingly — never guess on multiple-correct questions.

Exam-Day Strategy

Carry your JEE Advanced admit card, a valid photo ID, and a passport-size photograph. Report to the centre at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start. The exam is computer-based — practice extensively on the official mock test interface at jeeadv.ac.in. In the exam, attempt questions you are fully confident about first, then return to uncertain ones. Do not spend more than 3 minutes on any single question in the first pass.

Mental Health and Physical Wellbeing

Sleep at least 7 hours nightly, especially in the final month. Short 20-minute revision sessions the evening before the exam are sufficient — avoid cramming new topics. Stay hydrated during the exam; water bottles are permitted inside the hall.

JEE Advanced Counselling Process

JEE Advanced Counselling — JoSAA Process

After JEE Advanced results are declared (typically in June), seat allotment for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Other Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) is conducted jointly by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Candidates qualifying JEE Advanced are eligible for IIT seats; JEE Main qualifiers (non-Advanced) are eligible for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats. The entire process is online at josaa.nic.in.

  1. JoSAA Registration: Qualified candidates must register on the JoSAA portal within the announced window (typically 3–5 days after JEE Advanced results). Registration requires JEE Advanced roll number, email ID, and mobile number.
  2. Choice Filling & Locking: Candidates fill institute and branch preferences in order of priority. JoSAA 2024 offered over 58,000 seats across 118 institutes. Choices must be locked before the deadline — unlocked choices are not considered.
  3. Mock Seat Allotment: JoSAA releases 1–2 mock allotment rounds so candidates can review likely outcomes and revise choices before the official rounds begin.
  4. Official Seat Allotment Rounds: JoSAA conducts 5–6 official allotment rounds. After each round, candidates must either:
    • Accept the seat and freeze (no further upgrades sought)
    • Accept and float (retain seat, participate in upgrades)
    • Accept and slide (upgrade within same institute/programme only)
    • Reject (forfeits the seat; candidate exits the process)
  5. Online Document Verification (ODV): After each round's allotment, candidates must report to their allotted institute's portal or a designated Reporting Centre to upload/verify documents: Class 10 & 12 mark sheets, JEE Advanced scorecard, category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS), PwD certificate if applicable, and passport-size photographs.
  6. Seat Acceptance Fee Payment: A non-refundable seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 for General/OBC; ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD) is paid online to confirm the allotment. This amount is adjusted against the institute's admission fee at reporting.
  7. Physical Reporting at Institute: After the final round, candidates with a confirmed seat must report physically to their allotted IIT/NIT/IIIT with original documents, pay the remaining admission fees, and complete medical fitness formalities. Failure to report by the deadline results in automatic cancellation of the seat.

CSAB Special Rounds: After JoSAA closes, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts special rounds to fill vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Candidates who did not get a seat in JoSAA or wish to try for a different branch can register separately for CSAB Special Rounds.
