Latest Admission Updates (2026)

Admission to National Institute of Technology Rourkela for the 2026-27 session is in its active phase, with JoSAA seat allotment rounds currently underway as of June 2026. Below are the most recent, dated updates that every JEE Main 2026 aspirant targeting NIT Rourkela should track.

  • Most important deadline: JoSAA 2026 choice locking and seat acceptance for ongoing rounds is live; the seat acceptance fee must be paid within 24-48 hours of each allotment result or the seat lapses.
  • JoSAA Round 1 seat allotment was declared on 13 June 2026; Round 2 seat allotment is scheduled for 30 June 2026 and Round 3 for 3 July 2026.
  • Currently open window: Online reporting, document upload and seat acceptance fee payment for allotted candidates is active between rounds (as of June 2026).
  • JEE Main 2026 results (the sole entrance route for B.Tech here) were declared by NTA on 16 February 2026 (Session 1, Paper 1) and 20 April 2026 (Session 2).
  • New for 2026-27: Two brand-new B.Tech programmes - Mathematics and Computing and Engineering Physics, each with an inaugural intake of 25 seats - have been added to JoSAA 2026 counselling and are open to JEE Main 2026 qualified candidates.
  • CSAB special rounds for vacant NIT seats are expected after JoSAA concludes (based on the 2025 schedule).

National Institute of Technology Rourkela Admission 2026: Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility at National Institute of Technology Rourkela is programme-specific, and getting it right before you apply saves a rejected candidature later. The table below sets out, course by course, the qualifying degree, the minimum aggregate NIT Rourkela demands, and the exact entrance exam each programme accepts in 2026. This directly answers the most common applicant question - "Am I eligible for NIT Rourkela?" - without forcing you to read multiple notifications. Read it row by row: the B.Tech route runs entirely through JEE Main, while postgraduate programmes route through GATE, CAT, or IIT JAM. The minimum-marks column reflects only the verified base criteria.

ProgrammeEligibilityQualifying MarksAccepted Entrance Exam
B.Tech (4 years)10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM)Minimum 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST)JEE Main 2026
B.Tech Mathematics and Computing (new, 2026)10+2 with PCMMinimum 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST)JEE Main 2026
B.Tech Engineering Physics (new, 2026)10+2 with PCMMinimum 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST)JEE Main 2026
M.Tech (2 years)B.E./B.Tech or M.Sc in a relevant disciplineMinimum 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% for SC/ST)GATE
MBA (2 years)Bachelor's degree in any disciplineMinimum 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% for SC/ST)CAT / XAT / MAT / CMAT
Executive MBA (3 years)Bachelor's degree plus work experience; employed within commutable distance of RourkelaAs per institute normsRefer to official notification
M.Sc (2 years)B.Sc with the relevant subjectMinimum 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% for SC/ST)IIT JAM

The key takeaway: the 75% (65% for SC/ST) class-12 aggregate plus a valid JEE Main 2026 rank are the twin gates for every B.Tech aspirant, including the two new programmes. Postgraduate applicants must hold a valid GATE, CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT or IIT JAM scorecard depending on the programme. The Executive MBA stands apart, requiring work experience and local employability near Rourkela. Confirm your category certificate is in the Government of India format before counselling, as it is verified during JoSAA document checks.

Course-Wise Admission Status

This section answers "Which programmes at National Institute of Technology Rourkela are open right now and how many seats are on offer?" The table maps each programme to its live application status, sanctioned intake, admission mode, and accepted exam for 2026-27. It matters because seat counts decide how competitive a branch is - a 28-seat programme closes far faster than a 113-seat one. Read the Mode column carefully: B.Tech runs through JoSAA, M.Tech through CCMT, M.Sc through CCMN, and MBA through a CAT/XAT-plus-interview shortlist.

ProgrammeApplication Status (June 2026)SeatsModeAccepted Exam
B.Tech (across branches)Counselling active via JoSAAApprox. 895 across branches (28 to 113 per branch)JoSAA seat allotmentJEE Main 2026
B.Tech Mathematics and Computing (new)Open via JoSAA 202625JoSAA seat allotmentJEE Main 2026
B.Tech Engineering Physics (new)Open via JoSAA 202625JoSAA seat allotmentJEE Main 2026

MBAShortlist plus interview75Score plus personal interviewCAT / XAT / MAT / CMAT
Executive MBARefer to official notificationAs notifiedInstitute processRefer to official notification
M.ScThrough CCMN28 per streamCCMN counsellingIIT JAM

The headline takeaway: B.Tech is the largest gateway at National Institute of Technology Rourkela with roughly 895 seats across branches, and the two new 25-seat programmes (Mathematics and Computing, Engineering Physics) add 50 fresh seats in 2026. Postgraduate intakes are tighter - most M.Tech specialisations carry 15 to 28 seats and M.Sc streams 28 each - so qualified candidates should lock choices early. If you hold a 2026 JEE Main rank, prioritise locking JoSAA choices before each round's deadline; PG aspirants should register on CCMT, CCMN, or the MBA portal as applicable.

Application Fees

Aspirants frequently confuse the entrance-exam application fee (paid to the conducting body, NTA) with the institute's tuition fee (paid to NIT Rourkela after allotment). This section isolates the application/exam fee that you pay to sit the qualifying test, broken out by category, so there is no ambiguity. The figures below are the JEE Main 2026 fees that gate B.Tech admission here, with each category on its own row as per NTA's notification. Note that these are non-refundable and are entirely separate from the B.Tech tuition fee of around 6.30 Lakh discussed later.

Programme / ExamCategoryApplication FeeYear
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper, male)GeneralRs 1,0002026
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper, male)EWSRs 8002026
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper, male)OBC-NCLRs 8002026
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper)SCRs 5002026
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper)STRs 5002026
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper)PwDRs 5002026
B.Tech / JEE Main (single paper, female)Female (General/EWS/OBC-NCL)Rs 8002026

The takeaway: JEE Main 2026 application fees are low compared with the programme cost, ranging from Rs 500 for SC/ST/PwD candidates to Rs 1,000 for General male applicants, with female and EWS/OBC-NCL male candidates at Rs 800. These are paid once to NTA at the application stage and are non-refundable. Separately, when you accept a JoSAA seat at National Institute of Technology Rourkela, you pay the seat acceptance fee covered in the Counselling Process section, which is later adjusted against tuition. For MBA, M.Tech and M.Sc, the application fee for CAT, GATE and IIT JAM respectively is set by those conducting bodies and is not separately listed here.

Entrance Exam Requirements

National Institute of Technology Rourkela does not run its own entrance test for any programme - it relies entirely on national exams. This section answers "Which exam do I need for my target programme, when is it in 2026, and what score gets me in?" The table pairs each accepted exam with the programme, the 2026 exam window, and a realistic competitive band for this institute. Use the typical score column as a benchmark only; actual closing ranks shift each round, as the Cutoff Analysis below shows.

ExamProgramme2026 Exam DateTypical Qualifying Score / Rank (this institute)
JEE Main (Session 1)B.Tech21-29 January 2026General closing rank around 8,000 (flagship branch)
JEE Main (Session 2)B.Tech2-8 April 2026General closing rank around 8,000 (flagship branch)
GATEM.TechFebruary 2026 (refer to official notification)Around 660-710 marks for M.Tech CSE (expected)
CAT / XAT / MAT / CMATMBAAs per respective bodyMAT around 80-85 percentile, General (expected)
IIT JAMM.ScFebruary 2026 (refer to official notification)M.Sc Mathematics around 700-860 rank (expected)

The takeaway for B.Tech aspirants: a JEE Main 2026 General rank inside roughly 8,000 keeps the flagship branch within reach at National Institute of Technology Rourkela, while reserved-category candidates close at considerably better ranks (see below). PG aspirants should treat the GATE, CAT and IIT JAM bands above as expected benchmarks based on prior trends, not guarantees. Since the institute admits M.Tech through CCMT, M.Sc through CCMN and MBA through a score-plus-interview process, register on the relevant counselling portal as soon as your scorecard is out.

Cutoff Analysis (2024-2026)

The cutoff is the single most decisive number for any National Institute of Technology Rourkela aspirant, because admission is purely rank-driven through JoSAA. This table tracks the JEE Main closing rank for the General category across years, alongside the verified reserved-category closing ranks on record, so you can see exactly how competitive the institute has become. It answers "What rank do I need for NIT Rourkela?" with hard figures rather than vague advice. Read the General row as a trend line and the category rows as the relaxation reserved candidates enjoy at the same institute.

Category2023 Closing Rank2024 Closing Rank2025 Closing Rank2026 Closing Rank
General6,8427,8077,8538,000
OBC-NCL2,518Refer to official notificationRefer to official notificationRefer to official notification
SC764Refer to official notificationRefer to official notificationRefer to official notification

The clear trend: the General closing rank at National Institute of Technology Rourkela has steadily loosened from 6,842 in 2023 to 7,807 in 2024, 7,853 in 2025, and around 8,000 in 2026 - a gradual rise that reflects growth in JEE Main applicant numbers and the addition of new branches and seats, including the two 25-seat programmes for 2026. Reserved candidates remain far more comfortably placed: the verified 2023 figures show OBC-NCL closing at 2,518 and SC at 764. If your 2026 General rank is near 8,000, you have a genuine shot at the institute, so fill choices aggressively across branches; reserved-category aspirants with stronger ranks should still list preferred branches first to use the relaxation.

Counselling Process

Admission to B.Tech at National Institute of Technology Rourkela is conducted entirely through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), not by the institute directly. Follow these steps in order:

  1. JEE Main 2026 result: Qualify JEE Main (Session 1 result 16 February 2026, Session 2 result 20 April 2026) and obtain your All India Rank.
  2. JoSAA registration and choice filling: Register on josaa.nic.in and fill college-branch choices. For 2026 this window ran from 2 to 11 June 2026.
  3. Mock allotments and choice locking: Review the mock seat allotments, rearrange preferences, and lock choices before the deadline.
  4. Seat allotment: JoSAA declares round-wise allotment. Round 1 was on 13 June 2026, Round 2 on 30 June 2026 and Round 3 on 3 July 2026.
  5. Seat acceptance and fee payment: Accept the allotted seat and pay the seat acceptance fee of Rs 35,000 (General/EWS/OBC-NCL) or Rs 15,000 (SC/ST/PwD) within 24-48 hours; choose Freeze, Float or Slide.
  6. Online document verification: Upload Class X and XII mark sheets/certificates and category certificate (if applicable) on the JoSAA portal for verification.
  7. Reporting at NIT Rourkela: After the final round (and CSAB special rounds, if applicable), report to the institute and pay the balance of the B.Tech fee.

M.Tech admission follows the same logic through CCMT (GATE-based), M.Sc through CCMN (IIT JAM-based), and MBA through a CAT/XAT/MAT/CMAT shortlist followed by a personal interview at the Department of Management Studies.

Important Dates (2026)

Missing a single deadline can cost you a seat at National Institute of Technology Rourkela, so this master calendar consolidates every canonical milestone from JEE Main application through JoSAA seat allotment and verification. It answers "What are all the National Institute of Technology Rourkela admission dates for 2026?" in one place. The Status column tells you what has already happened versus what is still ahead as of June 2026. Treat any event marked "to be announced" as pending an official notification.

JoSAA seat allotment (Round 3)3 July 2026Upcoming
Document verification (online)Within each round window (June-July 2026)Ongoing

The key takeaways: as of June 2026, the JEE Main exam cycle is fully complete and the action has shifted entirely to JoSAA seat allotment, with Round 2 (30 June) and Round 3 (3 July) still ahead. The most urgent task for an allotted candidate is paying the seat acceptance fee and completing online document verification within each round's narrow window. Keep checking josaa.nic.in daily during counselling, and watch for the CSAB special-round notification if you remain unallotted after the final JoSAA round.

Frequently Asked Questions: National Institute of Technology Rourkela Admission 2026

How do I apply for B.Tech admission at National Institute of Technology Rourkela in 2026?

You apply through JEE Main followed by JoSAA counselling, not directly to the institute. First qualify JEE Main 2026, then register on josaa.nic.in, fill your branch-college choices, lock them, and wait for seat allotment. National Institute of Technology Rourkela admits all B.Tech students through JoSAA seat allotment rounds. Once allotted, you pay the seat acceptance fee, complete online document verification, and report to the institute.

What is the last date to apply to National Institute of Technology Rourkela in 2026?

There is no separate institute application for B.Tech; the operative deadlines are JEE Main and JoSAA. JEE Main Session 2 applications closed on 25 February 2026, and JoSAA registration and choice filling ran from 2 to 11 June 2026. As of June 2026, the live deadlines are the round-wise seat acceptance and document verification windows, which must be met within 24 to 48 hours of each allotment result.

What is the eligibility for National Institute of Technology Rourkela B.Tech admission?

You need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and a minimum aggregate of 75% (65% for SC/ST candidates), plus a valid JEE Main 2026 rank. This applies to all B.Tech branches at National Institute of Technology Rourkela, including the two new 2026 programmes - Mathematics and Computing and Engineering Physics. Admission is then decided purely by your JEE Main rank through JoSAA counselling.

Which entrance exams does National Institute of Technology Rourkela accept?

National Institute of Technology Rourkela accepts JEE Main for B.Tech, GATE for M.Tech, IIT JAM for M.Sc, and CAT/XAT/MAT/CMAT for MBA. There is no institute-level entrance test. B.Tech admission runs through JoSAA, M.Tech through CCMT, M.Sc through CCMN, and MBA through a score-plus-interview shortlist at the Department of Management Studies.

What is the application fee for JEE Main 2026 for National Institute of Technology Rourkela admission?

The JEE Main 2026 application fee is Rs 1,000 for General male candidates, Rs 800 for EWS/OBC-NCL male and all female candidates, and Rs 500 for SC, ST and PwD candidates (single paper, India centres). This non-refundable fee is paid to NTA, not to National Institute of Technology Rourkela, and is entirely separate from the institute's B.Tech tuition fee of around 6.30 Lakh.

What rank is required for admission to National Institute of Technology Rourkela?

A JEE Main 2026 General-category rank around 8,000 is competitive for the flagship branch at National Institute of Technology Rourkela. The General closing rank has risen from 6,842 in 2023 to about 8,000 in 2026. Reserved-category candidates close at far better ranks; verified 2023 figures show OBC-NCL closing at 2,518 and SC at 764. Less competitive branches accept higher ranks.

What is the selection criteria for B.Tech at National Institute of Technology Rourkela?

Selection is based entirely on your JEE Main 2026 All India Rank, with no separate interview or written test for B.Tech. After results, you fill choices in JoSAA, and seats are allotted strictly by merit and category rank across rounds. You must also meet the 75% (65% for SC/ST) class-12 eligibility. The final seat depends on your rank, chosen branches, and category.

What documents are required for National Institute of Technology Rourkela admission?

For JoSAA verification you need your Class X mark sheet/certificate (for date of birth), Class XII mark sheet and certificate, JEE Main 2026 admit card and scorecard, a category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) in Government of India format if applicable, and a PwD certificate where relevant. These are uploaded on the JoSAA portal during the round, and originals are verified when you report to National Institute of Technology Rourkela.

Recent Updates (2026)

For the 2026-27 admissions cycle, two brand-new BTech programmes have been added to JoSAA counselling: Mathematics and Computing and Engineering Physics, each with an inaugural intake of 25 students. These programmes are available to candidates qualified in JEE Main 2026 and will be part of the standard JoSAA seat allotment rounds.
